Rumor: Resident Evil 8 Details Leak, Most Likely From Rumored Scrapped Version

First things first, remember that as these are still rumors all of this must be taken with a grain of salt. Moving on from that, we may have our first details for Resident Evil 8 — or possibly something else. Resident Evil fansite BioHazard Declassified received an anonymous tip regarding the content of the upcoming Resident Evil 8. While they were unable to verify any of these claims independently, there are a few layers to this story so bear with us.  The bullet points are as follows:

  • Ethan will be returning as a playable character.
  • Resident Evil 8 was tested last year.
  • It will not be called Resident Evil 8, but will have a “clever title”
  • The game will be in First-person like RE7.
  • Gameplay starts in a village leading up to a castle.
  • The environment will be rural, snowy, and mountainous; possibly Europe.
  • Regular zombies will be appearing instead of the Molded from RE7.
  • There is a persistent shadowy “female” enemy that will follow you but will dissipate if shot.
  • There are also wolf-like creatures that will attack the player in certain areas.
  • Chris Redfield will also be returning in some capacity.

If we take this information at face value, it would seem that Resident Evil 8 would be walking down the same path of nostalgia that RE7 benefitted from. 2017’s Resident Evil 7 prominently featured a mansion, channeling memories of the Spencer Estate — perhaps the most famous location in the franchise outside of the R.P.D. station. Resident Evil 6 also dabbled in nostalgia as well, revisiting a city-wide outbreak with strong Raccoon City vibes, and even briefly a very Spencer Mansion-esque city hall. Resident Evil 8 following these up with what would appear to be a nostalgia trip for fans of Resident Evil 4 sounds like exactly the sort of thing they’d do. The creature lineup also feels like a suitable follow-up to RE7, although many seem to be interpreting “wolf-like creatures” to mean werewolves, which seems a step beyond what that description actually implies.

Anyway, odds are good all this information is moot — AestheticGamer, who we recently sourced for a different story regarding Resident Evil 8 and have (thus far) never been led astray by, weighed in on this information himself. Evidently BioHazard Declassified reached out to him before publishing, and AestheticGamer is positive that the version being leaked here is the earlier, now scrapped, version of the title. From his Twitter:

Me & the people who are sharing the RE8 rumor actually talked about this a few days ago, for the record I am certain the RE8 that’s being talked about is not the final game and is probably what Capcom rebooted about half a year ago. I think Capcom did a vertical slice test with fans to see where they sit with it, I didn’t specifically know about the werewolves and witches until we talked about it. But something about the Chris thing and B-Movie monster direction fit very well with two other things I know, so I believe it. But even if I believe it, I’m also aware that this isn’t the direction the final RE8 is going in. And Capcom are deciding what to carry over and what to severely change about RE8‘s direction when rebooting it.

I guess I’ll also mention this, there’s also a chance this might be moved to a side game or something. I know for a fact this is NOT RE8‘s final version. But it isn’t unheard of they take scrapped ideas & turn it into something else, that’s actually how Revelations 2 came into being. This part is purely my speculation, but as these tests were done after RE8 had already been rebooted, I’m curious if Capcom wants to see if they can still do something with their work or not. That is one possibility.

AestheticGamer again refers to the “wolf-like creatures” as werewolves, and seems to describe the shadow woman (for lack of a better term at the moment) as a “witch”. Regardless, AestheticGamer stands firm that this is not the final version of Resident Evil 8, but pondering that the ideas might not be thrown out altogether isn’t totally off base. Resident Evil actually has a history of roping in even scrapped ideas eventually, even if it takes years and years. AestheticGamer references “two other things” he knows, which means it’s probably only a matter of time before he divulges more.
