2026 has been one of the biggest years for the horror genre and its fans. We have seen some amazing indie releases like Crabmeat, Unsealed: The Mare, The Occultist, The Floor Above, and many more. But not just indies, major releases like Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, and Resident Evil Requiem also arrived in 2026.
We were already blessed with so many great releases, but it seems that the biggest month for the horror genre is still yet to come. As a horror fan, September is gonna be a treat in many ways, as we are set for some huge titles and the return of major franchises like Silent Hill and Control.
Let’s take a look at what to expect from September.
Halloween: The Game Kicks Off September’s Horror Lineup
The beautiful month of September will start with the release of the iconic Halloween: The Game, which comes out on September 8. The developer announced the title last year but stayed quiet until earlier this year, when it finally showed off the multiplayer gameplay.
The team has also confirmed that iconic characters from the original movie will be playable, which has only created more anticipation. Pre-orders for Halloween: The Game have already gone live, with the developers also sharing more information with fans, including new maps and more.
This is honestly one of the titles I’ve been waiting for for a long time, especially because it’s an adaptation of the classic 1978 slasher film. Even though this is already a big release, it’s even crazier to think that this is just the start of the month.
Cosmic Fear Brings Lovecraftian Horror to the Month
Just a day after Halloween: The Game, we will be getting Cosmic Fear, a first-person Lovecraftian psychological horror adventure developed by Alessandro Guzzo, an independent Italian developer known for creating solo psychological horror games.
This year has been massive for indie developers, and judging by what we have seen so far from the trailer, Cosmic Fear isn’t a title one should ignore. The game follows a person who discovers evidence of a mysterious cosmic presence that has been influencing humanity since the beginning of history. They also discover that many strange events from the past are connected to it.
To dig deeper into the mystery, the protagonist goes on another expedition to uncover the truth, leading to the discovery of a forgotten part of humanity’s history. This is another great indie coming out on September 9 that you shouldn’t sleep on.
September 24 Is Going to Be a Massive Day for Horror Fans
September 24 is the date to remember. We are getting not one, but two of the biggest horror games of the year on the same day. One is, of course, the return of the Silent Hill franchise with Silent Hill: Townfall, which will receive a new trailer next month at Gamescom 2026.
It’s great to see Konami’s consistency, as the release of Silent Hill: Townfall will mark the third consecutive year of releases from the publisher for the franchise. The other major release is Control Resonant. The franchise is finally returning after seven years, and I’m so ready to try it out.
Remedy has already confirmed that its largest team in history is working on the project, as the developer wants to take the franchise to the next level. The story trailer also looks incredible, and the game surely looks much better than its predecessor. Pre-orders are already live for both titles, and this is literally a peak cinema moment for horror genre fans.
September Is Packed With Major Horror Releases
Honestly, as a long-time horror genre fan, I’ve seen times when we had to wait for months to play one good horror title. That’s why seeing a time when we are getting so many great and different experiences in a single month is kind of mesmerising, as it feels like someone has finally heard us as fans.
And the best part is that all these games will offer something different. Halloween: The Game is the classic slasher horror experience, while Cosmic Fear focuses on Lovecraftian and psychological horror. Silent Hill: Townfall will offer an even more disturbing experience than any of these titles, whereas Control Resonant brings a more supernatural, action-focused experience.
I’m very excited for September and hoping that many horror fans like me, who’ve seen only a few good horror games release each year, will finally be ready (save up, you’ve still got time) to have an amazing month with so many great releases just around the corner.
