After years of silence, Panache Digital Games and Creative Director Patrice Désilets have officially brought 1666: Amsterdam back into the spotlight. As part of Summer Game Fest 2026, a new trailer was released for the first time.
In 1666: Amsterdam, players explore an alternative version of 17th-century Amsterdam through a story-driven third-person action-adventure. The game draws heavily from Dutch culture and architecture of the era while weaving supernatural horror elements into the historical setting.
At the center of the story is Noa Brooklyn, a so-called “Collector”. She uses witchcraft and ancient spells to track down demonic beings. These entities, known as “The Originals,” have lived unnoticed among humans for centuries, hiding their true forms behind human faces. However, Noa is not traveling alone.
By her side is Aaron, a character from the year 1999 who experiences the world from the perspective of a cat. Players can switch between both characters and use different approaches as a result. While Noa relies on magic and spells, Aaron, as a cat, opens up alternative ways of exploration and gathering information.
Particularly interesting is the structure of the story. The plot of 1666: Amsterdam does not take place exclusively in the titular year of 1666. Instead, the game intertwines multiple timelines, including events from 1999 as well as the present day. The narrative uses these different eras to gradually unravel a centuries-old conspiracy and reveal the secrets of the Originals.
Although an exact release date remains unknown, Panache Digital Games currently targets a 2026 Early Access launch on PC for 1666: Amsterdam. The team also plans to release the game on consoles further down the line.
Anyone who would like to get a first look at the game can already download the free prologue on Steam. It includes around 30 minutes of gameplay and serves as an introduction to the world. While the demo focuses primarily on the story and introducing the characters, it already offers a promising glimpse of what players can expect from the full experience.
