The Case of Charles Dexter Ward rises on Kickstarter

Deep within the bowels of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a new Lovecraftian game has been awoken and is subsequently being Kickstarted. Senscape, creator of Scratches, Serena, and the upcoming Asylum are bringing us The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. This marks the first time that H.P. Lovecraft’s official brand is being used in the creation of a game, and Senscape is promising something special. Company founder Augustín Cordes pokes fun at all of the other games that incorporate tentacles and slimy things and slap a “inspired by Lovecraft” on the box, and assures potential supporters that his team has a love for the material that will lead to a more accurate representation.

For those unfamilar with the novel, the story revolves around Charles Dexter Ward and Dr. Marinus Willett trying to protect Providence, Rhode Island from the threat of Joseph Curwen, a warlock who has made a pact with something ancient and evil. As this is being described by the team as a  “long-lost classic horror game by LucasArts,” there will be no action, weapons, enemies, jumping, or running. I’m excited to see how they will bring that horror that exists between physical spaces that Lovecraft is known for. At the time of writing, they’ve raised $37,700 out of their $250,000 goal. Their stretch goal is to make this into an on-going series where they could choose other Lovecraft stories to gamify. I’m personally hoping for “The Haunter of the Dark,” though it might not translate well. If you want to see if The Case of Charles Dexter Ward deserves your dollar, here’s a video:
