Akira Yamaoka talks about the music of Shadows of the Damned

If you’re a fan of survival-horror then you definitely know and respect the name, Akira Yamaoka. Most notably known for his work on the Silent Hill series, Yamaoka is now the Sound Director and Chief Creative Officer over at Grasshopper Manufacture, whose latest game is Shadows of the Damned.

I still haven’t published my review–you can look for it sometime tomorrow–but one of the things I’ll be praising a lot is the music, Yamaoka really brings the game to life with his fitting score. So, where did he get the ideas for some of the tracks? He recently put up a post over at the Playstation Blog in which he talks about his influences leading up to the production of the game’s score. You can find an excerpt below which focuses on his inspiration for the track titled “Broken Dreams”. Head on over to the source for the full read.

Broken Dreams

You could say I created this track to be the title song for Shadows of the Damned. Originally, I had planned to make it a duet, as sort of a theme for the two lovers: Garcia and Paula. I wanted to match the heavy, aggressive sound to the game world with Paula and Garcia at the center. I never thought that the game´s genre had anything to do with it, never made it sound the way it is just because it´s an action game. It´s a long song – over seven minutes – but you can think of it as a compressed version of the experience you´ll have playing the game and venturing into its hellish world.

I used a special seven-string guitar to get the sinking sound. I think you´ll get a heavier impression from this than you are used to hearing from a guitar.
