Independent studio Guillotine Games has announced that horror-comedy icon Lloyd Kaufman – co-founder of Troma Entertainment and creator of The Toxic Avenger – has joined Mystery House 3D as the game’s narrator, recording over five minutes of original narration. Mystery House 3D is the studio’s upcoming R-rated revival of the 1980 Roberta Williams classic.
The reveal lands alongside the game’s expanded 2.0 demo, playable to the public for the first time at Too Many Games 2026 (June 26-28, Oaks, PA). At the event, Guillotine Games founder Marcus Mera will also be showing new Fire and Ice variants of his physical Colossal Cave Collector’s Edition, having previously worked with Ken and Roberta Williams on Colossal Cave 3D.
Mystery House 3D is a modern reimagining of Roberta Williams’ Mystery House (1980), widely credited as the first graphical adventure game in history and one of the earliest horror games on record. The game’s success launched On-Line Systems, which later became known as Sierra On-Line, into a major force in the industry.
The upcoming revival project preserves the essence of the original – a locked Victorian mansion with a murder mystery at its core – while building upon that foundation with fully realized 3D environments.
The game preserves the structure and tension of the original while introducing modern systems, cinematic presentation, and immersive exploration.
Planned proloque and epilogue sequences will further enhance the narrative framing, leaning into the game’s horror roots.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Originally released in 1980 for the Apple II, Mystery House was designed by Roberta Williams and programmed by Ken Williams. Inspired by Agatha Christie’s best-selling mystery novel And Then There Were None, the game placed players inside a remote mansion with a killer hidden among its characters. It was the first commercial adventure game to combine text with graphics, helping define the genre and leading to the creation of Sierra On-Line.
Among its key influences was Colossal Cave Adventure by Will Crowther and Don Woods. Guillotine Games is also developing a Colossal Cave Collector’s Edition in collaboration with Sir Randall of YeOLD.press, featuring hand-crafted physical replicas of in-game treasures.
No planned release date has been announced for Mystery House 3D yet, however it is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
