Fans of slow burn mysteries, folk horror, and True Detective now have a new title to keep on their radar. Finnish indie developer Horsefly Games has officially unveiled the first trailer for The Polar Darkness, a narrative-driven horror adventure inspired by shows such as True Detective, point-and-click Gabriel Knight, Finnish folklore, as well as cosmic horror.
Set during the long polar night, or Kaamos, in 1980s northern Finland, The Polar Darkness follows journalist Emma Järvelä as she travels to the isolated village of Sysiluoma to investigate a controversial religious revival movement. Led by a charismatic cult leader and her young child preacher, the community is thrown into chaos when the child vanishes during a sermon, only for a blizzard to cut the village off from the outside world.
Trapped alongside its increasingly suspicious residents, Emma must uncover the truth behind the disappearance while navigating a mystery where every villager appears to have their own version of events.
Game Features:
- Narrative-driven mystery with a slow-burning pace
- Investigation-focused gameplay built around dialogue and deduction
- Environmental and character-driven puzzles
- Time-based story progression where choices shape the story
- Multiple perspectives on the truth across different playthroughs
- A unique visual style combining photographed 2D characters with atmospheric 3D environments
- A soundtrack inspired by Finnish folk music and the atmosphere of the northern winter, composed and performed by Finnish folk artists
Rather than focusing on action, The Polar Darkness will lean heavily into investigation and deduction. Players will interrogate villagers, examine their surroundings, solve environmental puzzles, and gradually piece together a mystery rooted in Finnish folklore and local history. Creator Juho Kuorikoski cites classic investigative adventures like Gabriel Knight as a major influence, aiming to capture their deliberate pacing while grounding the experience in Finnish culture and mythology.
The Polar Darkness is currently in development for PC and can now be wishlisted on Steam. You can watch the debut trailer below:
