Psychological horror and science fiction have always complemented one another, feeding into the same fear of isolation and the unknown. That uneasy intersection is where upcoming indie sci-fi horror, The Dark Curiosity, plants itself. From Hungarian solo developer Tamas Sandor of Afterlife Studio, the game is now officially available to wishlist on Steam.
Set aboard an abandoned space station, The Dark Curiosity places players in the role of an unnamed protagonist who awakens alone, stripped of memory and surrounded by silence. As players explore dim corridors, laboratories, and abandoned living quarters, they’ll gradually piece together fragments of what happened to the station.
According to Sandor, player experience is designed around second guessing your own instincts, where every decision to move or remain still bears an underlying paranoia that you may already be making the wrong choice. Sandor stated:
I wanted to create a kind of tension where players are never completely sure if they’re safe. The fear comes from uncertainty, not knowing if what you’re doing is actually keeping you safe.
Game Features:
- Fully animated interactions with the environment
- A hostile creature driven by reactive AI that responds to player behavior
- Multiple encounter outcomes, including unique finisher animations
- Dynamic hiding systems, including lockers and emergency tunnels
- Varied gameplay design across different areas of the station
- Exploration supported by tools and an inventory system
- Gameplay built around tension, uncertainty, and player decision-making
- Environmental storytelling through logs, terminals, and subtle clues
- Immersive sound design powered by Wwise
- A focus mode to help detect nearby activity
- Sanity and stamina systems that influence how you explore and survive
