METRO 2039 was announced as the fourth mainline entry in the METRO franchise earlier this year, with the first trailer being shown in April. A few months later, Deep Silver and 4A Games have released a brand-new gameplay trailer for the title.
During Gamescom Opening Night Live, Executive Producer Jon Bloch and Co-Creative Director and Audio Lead Pavel Ulmer presented the second gameplay trailer for METRO 2039, titled “Renegade.” It gives us an even better look at the protagonist, The Stranger, and the world he finds himself in.
The latest footage highlights a much darker atmosphere, with the game appearing more brutal and horror-focused than previous entries in the franchise. It also introduces a previously unseen Metro station and offers a better look at the combat, including new weapons such as the Shatun pneumatic rifle.
We also get a closer look at The Stranger as he travels through Moscow, which has been occupied by the authoritarian Novoreich regime. The footage also gives us a glimpse into The Stranger’s past, although the developers have yet to reveal many details about his history.
While the overall plot of the title is still unknown, METRO 2039 takes place four years after Metro Exodus and almost 25 years after the nuclear war that forced Moscow’s survivors underground. 4A Games has also confirmed a February 2027 release window, with the title currently available to wishlist on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
