Hellblade is arguably UK developer Ninja Theory’s most successful franchise. The first game launched in 2017, and its sequel was released in 2024. In just two short years, Ninja Theory has announced another entry in the franchise, simply titled Senua.
During the recent Xbox Game Showcase, the developers officially revealed the announcement trailer of Senua, which also showcased gameplay. The last entry in the franchise received mixed reviews for its lack of gameplay, which was very “cinematic” and “movie-like.” In response, it seems that Ninja Theory has taken the criticism into consideration.
With Senua, the developers have shifted the focus from a purely cinematic experience to offer more interactive sequences. Unlike the last entry, this one will give players more freedom to explore, rather than guiding their paths all the time.
It seems the developers have addressed the key concerns raised by fans after the last release. Ninja Theory is calling it an out-and-out action-adventure game that will offer more combat depth and a stronger focus on the myth vs reality interaction, as Senua’s psychosis system will influence gameplay more directly through environmental shifts and perception puzzles, rather than audio.
Talking about why the game isn’t called Hellblade 3, Ninja Theory Studio Head Dom Matthews said that the name reflects that they are working on something fresh and new.
Matthews further stated:
The title of ‘Senua’ really reflects that this is something fresh, new, and different. It is a different style of game. I think Hellblade I and Hellblade II had an intention that we delivered on – but this is a different intention.
While the exact release date of the title is yet to be confirmed, the developers have confirmed that Senua will be released in 2027 and will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC via Steam.
