SDCC 2014: The Last of Us movie announced, Sam Raimi to produce

It looks like this year’s San Diego Comic-Con yielded a surprise for us, after all. During Screen Gem’s panel at the convention, Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man trilogy) and Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann took the stage to announce The Last of Us film is definitely happening. Badass Digest reports that Sam Raimi announced he will be producing the film, with Druckman as the film’s screenwriter.

There’s currently no director attached to the project, but the duo has said they’re already in talks with Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones fame to star in the film. The 14 year old actress is being eyed to play Ellie, but nothing official has been said at this time, with Raimi telling fans to question her about the role at the Game of Thrones panel – presumably to persuade her into accepting.

Badass Digest quotes Raimi as saying that the film will be faithful to the game, but Druckmann is considering making a few changes to make it stand out, namely the ending.

“What’s unique is that Neil’s writing the script. I have a great deal of confidence we’re going to end up with a script that’s true to the strengths of the game,” said Raimi at the panel.

With no director or cast announced at this time, the film has a long way to go before it’s out of pre-production, but it looks like the wheels are turning. Are you excited? Do you want to see Arya Stark as Ellie? Let us know in the comments!
