This is the type of news that quite frankly can make one pretty upset. Sure the whole premise behind Slant Six’s upcoming Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is one that should hold a strong entertainment value, but will it have the horror many fans have been asking for since the release of Resident Evil 5? No.
The game’s producer Masachika Kawata, speaikng with OXM, stated how with Operation Raccoon City the aim isn’t to bring forth a true horror experience in the franchise; instead we’ll be receiving a full-blown shooter wrapped in the Resident Evil name.
Excitement quickly arose when fans started reading about the game, especially due to fan-favorite characters (like Leon) and enemies (like the zombies, lickers, hunters) making a return in this spiritual successor to the Outbreak titles, but now worries can arise and be justified as well. Knowing that Operation Raccoon City will focus more on its shooting mechanics instead of horror is kind of a blow to fans who’ve been left bitter post-Kijuju. The reasoning behind such a move on Capcom’s part is summed up by Kawata’s following statement:
“The horror games can be pursued in the numbered titles. However, in a different universe in the Resident Evil world, there should be more challenge, there should be something else that I can do.”
Such a statement pretty much tells fans to wait for Resident Evil 6 (and Revelations despite not being numbered) to bring full-blown horror back and to expect a shooter-heavy approach to the franchise with this upcoming spin-off title. What do you guys think? Feel free to be as harsh as possible in the comments below, because I can understand the reasoning behind the anger that this could spawn in fans of the franchise.
