Resident Evil 4 Inspired Gears of War and Uncharted, Says Ex-Naughty Dog Developer

Resident Evil 4 Remake

More than twenty years after its release, a former Naughty Dog developer has praised Resident Evil 4 for how much it influenced the video game industry. And not just in horror gaming, either.

In a recent episode of the Kiwi Talks podcast, Jeremy Huxley, who used to work as a Senior Environmental Artist at the Last of Us and Crash Bandicoot studio, discussed how Resident Evil 4 helped shape modern game design.

According to Huxley, it introduced the over-the-shoulder camera, a feature that was later used in many other third-person games, such as Gears of War, Uncharted, Dead Space, and the Tomb Raider reboot.

Huxley believes Capcom’s survival horror classic has been responsible for a major innovation that spread throughout the industry, leading to some of the most beloved releases of the past few years.

The influential camera style was also used in the remake of RE4, where it was updated to meet modern gaming standards. The new version even lets players move around while aiming their weapons, making for a more dynamic experience.

In related news, Resident Evil 4 reached 10 million units sold, becoming the fastest-selling title in the series’ history.
