Resident Evil has already faced plenty of controversy since its initial announcement, with the movie’s director, Zach Cregger, who also worked on Weapons and Barbarian, confirming that the movie won’t feature any familiar characters like Leon S. Kennedy or Claire Redfield.
However, an official trailer was just released for Resident Evil, and it is making a clear connection to the games. The latest trailer is full of recognisable Resident Evil elements, including someone saying “Raccoon City” out loud, and, of course, zombies. Not only that, but we can also see a shot of a typewriter sitting on a desk in one of the scenes.
If you’ve been a fan of the franchise, you’d know that typewriters have long been considered one of the series’ iconic save mechanics. Not only that, but in one scene where the main protagonist of the movie, Bryan, searches through drawers for ammo, we can see shotgun shells from the same brands featured in the original Resident Evil 4.
These easter eggs, of course, connect the movie to the games. Cregger already confirmed that the movie won’t feature familiar characters, as he allegedly wants viewers to have the same experience while watching the movie as they do when playing the games. So, even though he didn’t adapt an existing story, he still aims to offer a similar experience players get while playing the games.
