Resident Evil Composer, Mamoru Samuragochi, Admits to Using Ghost Writers

Since 1996, fans of Resident Evil and Onimusha believed they had been listening to music composed by Mamoru Samuragochi. Just recently, he admitted to being a fraud and using ghost writers to compose his work for him on all sorts of projects, including possibly his most famous piece, the Hiroshima Symphony.

Samuragochi has suffered a degenerative hearing condition his entire life. In 1996, the year the original Resident Evil released, he began commissioning for help on his work. From 1999 and onward, having lost his hearing at age 35, he became fully invested in ghost writers.

His lawyer had this to say: “I’ve been told that there are certain circumstances that make it hard for the person (who composed the works) to come out in public, and Samuragochi has come to describe himself as the sole composer. He is mentally distressed and not in a condition to properly express his own thoughts.”

Samuragochi once said, “If you trust your inner sense of sound, you create something that is truer. Losing my hearing was a gift from God.”

Nippon Columbia Co. will stop shipping and selling his music. Samuragochi had assured them in the past that he was the sole composer of these works, but for an as of yet unknown reason, he had admitted to the compositions not being his own. His work is currently being featured in a nation-wide tour, but it may be cancelled.

This comes as a great surprise, especially to me. I have all of the Resident Evil OST’s ready to roll when I’m in the writing or drawing mood. Multiple composers have created music for the series over time, and while not all tracks are worth mentioning, I’m now wondering whether what I’m hearing has come from Samuragochi’s ‘inner sense of sound’ or these ghost writers.
