QuakeCon 2018: Bethesda Shows Off 17 Minutes Of DOOM Eternal Gameplay

Doom Eternal

During QuakeCon, Id Software and Bethesda dropped the promised gameplay reveal of DOOM Eternal, and they certainly didn’t hold back. We now have 17 minutes of gameplay across two gameplay demos during the event, showcasing various new additions to the game.

DOOM guy’s arsenal is clearly being expanded upon. New additions include…

  • Shoulder-mounted Missile Launcher (can be activated without switching weapons)
  • A grappling hook attached to the Double-Barreled Shotgun
  • Thruster packs enabling enhanced mobility
  • A new automatic machine gun
  • Some form of an energy sword (potential replacement for the chainsaw)

Most (if not all) of the demon types from the previous game will be returning, each with some visual redesigns. In addition, there appears to be a new tridactyl demon, a new brain-spider demon, and another tougher variant of the Cacodemon. The Baron of Hell seems to have gotten a bit of an upgrade too.

This time around, Id Software is striving to build a ‘DOOM Universe’ by expanding on the lore of the games. This is demonstrated in the second gameplay demo, through the fact that actual human beings can be seen assisting in ‘anti-demon’ measures. Furthermore, the locals shown off so far are infinitely more visually diverse. Now that we are getting away from Mars, the game will no longer be entirely brown and orange. While Id seems to be paying more attention to story and art direction, it doesn’t look like this detracts from the intense momentum-based gameplay at all — something that DOOM (2016) excelled at.
