Psychedelic Horror Invades a Spiritual Island Retreat in ‘The Chant’

The ChantThe Chant is an upcoming third-person horror action-adventure game developed by Vancouver-based indie developer Brass Token and published by Prime Matter, scheduled for release later this year.

In a press release from today, publisher Prime Matter provided a synopsis of the title:

Set at a spiritual retreat on the remote Glory Island, The Chant has you trying to survive a host of ethereal terrors unleashed after a ritual chant goes horribly awry and opens a portal to a nightmare dimension named The Gloom.

This dimension feeds off negative energy, driving you and the others mad by preying on anxieties and fears, manifesting them as interdimensional creatures. But all is not as lost as it seems. By unraveling the mysteries of a 1970s new age cult while strengthening your mind, body, and spirit, you can reverse the effects of the chant and avoid being trapped in The Gloom forever.

The Chant aims to take players on a journey of psychedelic horror the likes of which they have never experienced before.

The Chant

I’m always ready to welcome another third-person horror game to the table. The New Age spirituality angle has a lot of potential and the idea of a tranquil remote island retreat breaking down into a nightmarish fight for survival is a compelling premise for a horror game.

Tonally, I’m definitely getting Until Dawn meets Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture vibes from this one. It also has a good pedigree, with Brass Token led by industry veterans who have worked on titles such as Bully, Sleeping Dogs, and Gears of War.
