Ex-Blizzard devs producing episodic horror game ‘Broken’

A few self-titled Blizzard ‘veterans’ have announced a Kickstarter for a new episodic horror game titled Broken by their studio Kollide Entertainment. The game is set in 2020 and follows the story of a Navy Seal with two first names, Logan Kyle. The plot is based on the survivors of a biological weapon attack along with the resulting death and mutations and what it’s like to be at the forefront of the end of the world. Eh. The games main focus is said to be on the narrative, which can be good if the story is interesting, but also a third-person action-adventure title which presumably means shooting things as our Navy Seal. It remains to be seen how they intend to merge these things but hopefully it’s more horror that shooter.

Broken’s focus is 100% story driven; all aspects of the game will support that goal. We will be doing away with some of the time draining staples of the current action-adventure scene such as repetitive puzzle-based level design, arbitrary collection artifacts, obscenely difficult enemy spawn encounters, and superfluous achievements.

Broken has been inspired by a number of classics, including the superb and deep characters of The Last of Us, Half-Life‘s gameplay and plot presentation, and the storytelling of The Walking Dead Videogame (the brilliant Telltale one not the boring rubbish one).

Essentially, our goal is to offer unique immersive story experiences and to streamline gameplay such that returning to our game in between gameplay sessions is as seamless as possible. Ever stopped playing a game for a few weeks only to return to it and have no idea what the controls were? Yeah, us too.

Other than that, the footage shown is pretty early but you can check out their Kickstarter page here for some more details.
