Castlevania: Lords of Shadow ‘Reverie’ trailer analysis

This morning we finally received the highly anticipated trailer to Lords of Shadow’s upcoming ‘Reverie’ DLC. The trailer, while short and consisting of already used voice clips for the most part, does an extremely good job of showing us what to expect. Played to the brilliant composition of “Gabriel’s Theme” by Oscar Araujo, this trailer gets straight to the point, and now we’re here to analyze every last bit of it. Before we get started, though, feel free to re-watch the trailer below.

As theorized before in the screen-shots breakdown, the trailer consists of the game’s beautiful artwork with minimal animation, akin to Konami’s cut-scenes in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. And as also was theorized, the scene where Gabriel is “contemplating the abyss” takes place at the end of the main game, before the epilogue. We see the large structure where Gabriel is at after defeating Satan. We then start getting dialogue from the characters in the game that seem to have affected Gabriel the most.

Pan states: “How far are you prepared to go to uncover the truth?”. This of course alludes to the fact that Gabriel himself murdered his wife, Marie. Pan, of course, was a huge aid to Gabriel’s quest throughout the game up until the point where Gabriel ended up slaying him, which was something that needed to be done in order for Gabriel to conclude his journey.

“Your God cannot save you now, you will be one of us eventually” states the deceased Dark Lord of the vampires, Carmilla. This was said to Gabriel prior to their epic confrontation and of course this foreshadows the events of the epilogue where Gabriel, in fact, becomes “one of them”.

Then we have the “Lord of the Necromancers” stating: “Look at you, you revel in death.” This a statement that up to this point strongly describes the character and essence of Gabriel, to some degree. Because it seems like wherever he goes, the death of someone results even though he doesn’t actually intend for such things to occur. This was seen most prominently when he killed Claudia under the influence of the Death Mask, after she had helped him and even knew she would die at his hands.

“God doesn’t love you, he let your beloved die!” proclaims Satan. This was said to Gabriel at the end of the game with the intentions of having Gabriel join Satan in the opposition against God. Something Gabriel might be expected to do at this point, due to the loss of Marie. But Gabriel, instead, is blessed with the power of God and is able to take down Satan.

Then we get Laura basically reaching out to Gabriel, leading up to the scene we see pictured above, though only suggested via dialogue in the trailer. In the picture above we get Laura telling Gabriel that in order to overcome this big evil that has been unleashed, Gabriel will have to become a creature like her, which is of course a vampire.

This is something that, in one way or another, will most likely happen with my theory still being that Laura will die fighting this evil and then have Gabriel consume her abilities, or maybe Gabriel’s transition into a vampire will have something to do with that early ‘Reverie’ screen that depicted Laura at a fountain which is said to have the blood of the founders (as you can see below). Regardless, I still think Laura will meet her demise by the time Reverie’s 2 chapters conclude.

But what of this “unruly evil” ? While the trailer doesn’t really give any solid clues towards the identity of said evil, we do now know that he doesn’t reside in the castle itself. Laura states: “Gabriel, i need your help. You destroyed the Lords of Shadow, but in doing so you have unleashed a greater evil. A powerful demon is coming, we are the only ones with power enough to stop him”. The keywords here are “coming” and “him”.

Prior to this trailer the common assumption was that the evil source was already residing within the confines of the castle, with Carmilla keeping it in check. Now, though, the story is somewhat different. According to Laura, this evil is now coming to the castle due to Gabriel’s actions leading to the deaths of the Lords of Shadow. But which Lord did Gabriel not actually succeed in killing? The Lord of the Dead himself, Zobek.

If Zobek/Death is indeed the demonic evil that is making his way to the castle then this perfectly explains why we’ve seen concept art for the clock tower in ‘Reverie’. It also, obviously, explains why Necromancers are now residing in the castle because as we know they only go wherever the Lord of the Dead goes. Prior to this trailer I strongly felt that Zobek wouldn’t be playing that big of a role in ‘Reverie’ instead being saved for ‘Resurrection’ to have a bigger spotlight. Now, though, that theory has altered.

The theory hasn’t exactly been erased, though, and we can still possibly expect someone other than Zobek serving as this DLC’s big baddie. How so? Well, we still have the time machine. It’s also very interesting to note how when Laura states that “ a powerful demon is coming” we see a shot of the Castle as it was before Carmilla took it over, when it was run by Frankenstein and the Bernhard family. The big evil could still turn out to be one of Frankenstein’s creations, that may have been possibly kept by Carmilla within the castle of old, but now with Carmilla dead, that creation may be using the time machine to make his way to the Castle at its current time period. We’ll find out soon!

As you can see, even a short trailer such as the one released for ‘Reverie’ can bring forth a lot of interesting revelations! Now it’s time to count down the days till the DLC’s March 30th release date. You can expect a huge article before then, detailing everything we know so far about ‘Reverie’, including a break down of each of the early screens combined with these new revelations.
