Broken Spectre: Cosmic Horror From Blair Witch Creator Coming Soon

Another H.P. Lovecraft-inspired game, Broken Spectre, has been shown at Upload VR Showcase – Summer 2023 With a release date set for June 21, so it’s just around the corner.

Broken Spectre is developed by indie studio Games by Stitch and executive produced by Michael Monello, one of the producers and co-creators of The Blair Witch Project. These are credentials that pack quite a punch when it comes to being alone in the woods at night, one might hope. The developers say they like to focus on story-driven games, and this latest title is meant to be just that.

Broken Spectre: dark cave at night.

You are Casey, a young woman whose father disappeared in the woods many years ago. A newly appeared message rekindles your instinct to continue the search and voilá, you find yourself in a nightmare. This seems to be the gist of the game, but hey, doesn’t sound too bad to me.

Since it’s going to be released on the Meta Quest platform, don’t expect the visuals to blow your graphic socks off, obviously. The art style does look very distinct and deliberate, though.

In particular, the voice acting seems to really be the main focus in terms of story-telling. The emotionality and urgency in the protagonist’s voice leaves me wanting to know more immediately.

Here is what we could learn about the game from the Quest store page:

25 years ago your father climbed the mountain and never came back.
Now he’s calling for you.

Broken Spectre is a cosmic horror narrative game developed in collaboration with one of the makers of The Blair Witch Project. A cryptic message left by your father takes Casey back to the abandoned trails of Coldblood Mountain, a remote wilderness that has haunted her family for generations. A terrifying power stalks the mountain, watching Casey’s every move. Can Casey find her father using the clues he left behind? Or will something else find her first?

  • Horror You Can Touch – Broken Spectre takes advantage of the Quest immersive hand-tracking controls, bringing unparalleled realism to the game’s gruesome body horror elements.
  • Unique Cosmic Horror Narrative – Produced by one of the creators of The Blair Witch Project – a landmark of the found-footage horror genre – Broken Spectre is an original cosmic horror experience inspired by the works of John Carpenter and H.P. Lovecraft.
  • Distinctive Art Style – Experience the horrors of Coldblood Mountain with a unique, macabre visual style that brings the remote wilderness to life in all its unearthly glory.

Broken Spectre will release its Lovecraftian cosmic horrors for Quest, Quest 2 and Quest Pro on the Oculus store on June 21st. Check out the trailer below.
