Best Buy accidentally sells Metro: Last Light for a penny (Update: it’s dead)

[Update: Mods on Reddit claim that “official sources” have told them that the “deal” is dead. An acquaintance of mine says that his order was cancelled as well. An hour is a long time for a game to be sold for so cheap. Despite the hundreds, maybe thousands of smiling faces across the net from those who got a brand new game,  we can be sure that someone is getting fired tonight.]

Reddit user DarthCaesar discovered a pretty big pricing error on BestBuy.com. Deep Silver’s Metro: Last Light, normally retailing for $40 on PC, is accidently being sold for $0.01. A penny. Competitive pricing against Valve’s Steam Summer Sale? Probably not.

The post revealing the mistake has amassed a lot of attention since it was posted some an hour ago. As of writing, the mistake does not seem to have been corrected and the listing is still available. Comments in the thread suggest that there is no limit to how many purchases can be made by one buyer. This will definitely be troublesome for Best Buy and the game’s publisher.

The cause behind this pricing error seems to have been due to a Metro: Last Light voucher with the purchase of NVIDIA brand graphics cards. My guess is that the voucher page was accidentally made public when it should have been hidden behind special conditions. Those who successfully purchase the game are sent a NVIDIA key that had to be used on the special voucher website. From there, the keys were redeemed for Steam codes of the game.

Ouch.
