Team Junkfish, the studio known for the Monstrum series, has announced Wilderdark, a new first-person survival stealth horror game set on a very dangerous island. The game will release on PC through Steam in 2026, but players will be able to try it earlier with a free demo available from May 7th.
The idea behind the game mixes exploration, tension, and survival. In Wilderdark, you find yourself on an island infected by a strange organism that acts like a parasite. It spreads through the environment, affecting plants and even the dinosaurs living there. This creates a hostile place filled with deformed creatures and deadly predators, where even a small noise can put you in danger.
The main character is sent to the island by the organization they work for, which is interested in finding a way to achieve immortality. The mission is to study the ecosystem, collect samples, and discover what happened to previous expeditions that disappeared, including one led by the character’s parents.
In terms of gameplay, Wilderdark focuses more on careful and smart play instead of pure action. Players need to move slowly, manage resources well, and build tools using what they find. Observing the environment is important to understand what really happened. Photography also plays a key role, as you will use it to document your discoveries. Stealth is very important, especially to avoid the island’s strongest predators.
According to Team Junkfish, the project was kept secret for over three years and is meant to bring back the kind of horror their community has been asking for.
You can try out a demo for the game starting May 7th. Be sure to check out the announcement trailer below.
