Silent Hill: Townfall Dev Wants to Keep Fans Theorizing

Silent Hill: Townfall

Silent Hill 2 is still heavily discussed and theorized about more than two decades after its initial launch because its story deliberately leaves many details open to interpretation. Now, it seems like developers at Screen Burn Interactive want Silent Hill: Townfall to leave a similar impact on players.

In a recent conversation with GameSpot, game director Jon McKellan talked about the team’s goal of creating ambiguity in Townfall. According to the director, the team plans to give players just enough of the story while leaving plenty of mystery and ambiguity for them to discuss the game for many years to come. Jon stated:

It’s like, we can never unsee what we’ve seen and unknow what we know, so we think we’ve struck a balance of never being too explicit, never giving people the true canonical answer, like there’s still enough ambiguity there to make people want to dig in.

The director then pointed to Silent Hill 2, which fans continue to theorize about more than two decades after its launch, and said the team hopes Silent Hill: Townfall can achieve something similar. Though McKellan admits it is a very fine line to walk, the team hopes to thread that needle.

Luckily, players will not have to wait much longer, as Silent Hill: Townfall officially launches on September 24 for PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Players can also pre-purchase the game on Steam.
