Silent Hill: Townfall was first announced back in 2022, but since then, Konami has been quiet about its development, leaving many fans worried that the game might not be in development or might have been scrapped mid-development.
Recently, the team officially announced that Silent Hill: Townfall is still in development as a brand-new title. Soon after that, the developers revealed a first-ever gameplay trailer for the title, finally revealing it after nearly four years since its initial announcement.
The trailer confirms that Silent Hill: Townfall will be played from a first-person perspective, offering a more immersive experience for players. The trailer offers a first look at our protagonist, Simon Ordell. He has a device called CRTV, which is a fresh reinterpretation of the iconic radio that has been a staple in many Silent Hill games.
In a recent interview with PlayStation Blog, director Jon McKellan explains why they decided to bring back the iconic radio in the latest entry, saying:
Drawing on our previous experience designing interactive ‘retro’ user interfaces and VHS-style aesthetics, we wanted to take the handheld radio – an iconic tool of the Silent Hill series – and evolve it in our own way,
The director further states that the inclusion of the CRTV has been a major factor in the team’s decision to go with the first-person perspective for Silent Hill: Townfall.
The CRTV especially could only truly work in first person, allowing the player to raise it into view while they explore, tune into signals and discover broadcasts, and gain an advantage in otherwise terrifying situations.
It’s confirmed that Silent Hill: Townfall is being published by Annapurna and Konami, and developed by the Scottish studio Screen Burn. The game will feature a mix of melee, ranged combat, and stealth, delivering a compelling first-person survival horror experience.
This is indeed an exciting time for the franchise’s fans. While the developers have confirmed it will be released later this year on PS5 and PC, an official release date has not yet been announced. Fans can expect to hear more about the title in the coming months.
