E3: IGN on Resident Evil 6; “Varied, controls well, a lot of fun… but going to split the fanbase.”

We’ll have our own impressions on the RE6 demo on the site soon, but IGN has released a quick video detailing their thoughts on the game, some new footage, and new story details.

IGN say that all three characters gameplay do feel varied, the game actually controls very well, but unfortunately for some the game has a definite focus on co-op and action over horror from what they’ve played. Leon’s demo takes place in Tall Oaks University and starts off a bit slow and atmospheric, but soon all hell breaks loose. It can be an emotionally jarring experience as you watch a father deal with his daughter turning into a zombie. Chris on the other hand starts his journey by getting drunk in a bar to wash away his troubled mind. However, Piers, a rising star in the BSAA, believes that Chris can become the once great agent he was and stop wallowing on the past. However, things get bad quickly when a sudden outbreak strikes China and Chris and Piers run from rooftop to rooftop in a much more frantic high-speed gameplay segment that is reminiscent of the survival segments of Resident Evil 5. Jake is joined by Sherry while being chased by the colossus Nemesis-esque monster, Ustanak. They get cornered into a building where they have to lure the pursuer close to strategically placed red barrels.

All in all, they say that the action and controls have been greatly improved and it’s a lot of fun, but likely to split people who want Resident Evil to go back to their roots or want a scary experience based on what they’ve seen so far. Exciting, intense, but not scary at this point. You can check out the video below.
