Capcom on Mercs 3D save data fiasco

Regarding the issue of not being able to erase save data from Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Capcom has issued a statement to Destructoid.

“In Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, all mission progress is saved directly to the Nintendo 3DS cartridge, where it cannot be reset. The nature of the game invites high levels of replayability in order to improve mission scores. In addition, this feature does not remove any content available for users. Secondhand game sales were not a factor in this development decision, so we hope that all our consumers will be able to enjoy the entirety of the survival-action experiences that the game does offer.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but can’t you delete your save data from every other 3DS game available? If this feature was not meant to block used game sales, then Capcom has struck accidental gold. If Capcom did aim to prevent used game sales, they could have easily done some type of new copy incentive like EA has done with their games. Perhaps downloadable Leon or a special weapon. Blocking a fundamental feature found in games for the past decade seems a bit silly.

Users on Destructoid have also mentioned that their own local Gamestops have said “no” to used copies of the game. I’ve reached out to Gamestop myself for an official answer. Stay tuned.
