Resident Evil 2 Remake: Official RE2 Website Updated Just Days Before 20th Anniversary

Oh. Oh baby. Oh it’s happening baby.

While it’s safe to say that fans have been excited for the upcoming Resident Evil 2 Remake since its announcement all the way back in 2014, that excitement is coming to a head. After multiple teases seemingly popping up from various Capcom sources, it feels like an announcement (trailer, gameplay, etc) is just around the corner, especially seeing as this Sunday is Resident Evil 2‘s 20th anniversary.

One eager fan on Reddit decided to check out the original 1998 website for RE2, just in case and… not only is the site live (albeit displaying an almost completely blank page with the single word “OK” at the top of the screen), it’s been updated on the 14th and 15th of this month, just a few days ago.

NOW before we get super excited, it’s worth remembering a couple of things about web domains. Chiefly, this sort of thing happens all the time, with all sorts of different properties. Retaining a web domain requires this sort of constant upkeep, even if it’s a domain they don’t use in any way. It can even result in issues when a studio forgets and defaults on a domain, and smart fans buy them up in that window. Capcom has actually maintained this website for the last 20 years and updated it in much the same way last year as well. You can check the Wayback Machine; it’s been this blank page for a while now. But the timing of the changes is what’s so interesting, and hopefully points to preparations for an upcoming announcement.

Another interesting aspect is that… well, until just a little while ago, this domain actually just redirected to the main Capcom website. It wasn’t until last year, over a year after Resident Evil 2 Remake was announced that the website switched over to this page that says “OK”. It doesn’t make sense to just leave this page like this when it previously redirected to something more… I dunno, useful?

Basically, the point is that, regardless of normal web domain legality and whatnot, there certainly seems to at least be something up with this site. It’ll be interesting to see if after Sunday (when fans are hoping we’ll see an announcement), this site gets updated again into a proper RE2 site again. We’ll keep you updated.
