Indie horror continues to carve out its own identity, and the upcoming indie title Remorses offers a slow-burning experience rooted as much in psychological strain as it is in survival mechanics. Seeking to immerse players in a hauntingly grounded world, the game blends investigation, puzzle-solving, and an unusual approach to maintaining sanity.
Taking place in 1991 in Rivervalley, Lakota Territory, Remorses follows investigator Jake Lepistow from Beaver Hills, Minnesota, as he chases a string of disappearances tied to rumors of witchcraft. His search leads him to the infamous Westbrook Mansion, a place long avoided by locals and steeped in unsettling folklore. What begins as another routine brush with the supernatural quickly spirals into something far more personal.
Gameplay is stated to lean heavily into atmosphere-driven survival. One of Remorses’ most distinctive mechanics requires players to open windows to let in fresh air, a seemingly simple act that becomes essential to maintaining the sanity mechanic. Neglecting it comes with consequences, as an unseen force begins to distort perception and unravel the mind, ala Amnesia.
Players will also explore the mansion and its surrounding environments while solving a mix of logic, visual, and auditory puzzles. Along the way, they’ll gather ingredients tied to witchcraft, attempting to brew a countermeasure against the malevolent presence haunting the estate.
Backed by an original soundscape from talent behind Outlast and Visage, Remorses aims to deliver a deeply unsettling, methodical horror experience where tension builds gradually, and every breath may matter more than it seems.
The game is slated for launch in Q2 2026 on Steam for a price of $19.99, and developed by solo dev Veeti Kettunen.
