ONTOS was announced last year at The Game Awards and is a science-fiction adventure game developed by Frictional Games of SOMA and the Amnesia series (and published by Kepler Interactive). Although the studio initially confirmed a 2026 release, the team confirmed last month that it’s being delayed until 2027.
While fans had grown worried about the game’s development due to a lack of new footage, we have finally received the first gameplay trailer for ONTOS during the Opening Night Live presentation at Gamescom.
The latest trailer emphasizes psychological horror over straightforward scares. It also confirms that Dune and Thor actor Stellan Skarsgård has joined the cast. The game focuses on puzzles and offers a narrative-driven experience where players’ choices will shape the outcome.
Many situations won’t have a single correct answer or solution and depending on the choices that are made, the story can take different directions. Players will take on the role of Aditi Amani, an engineer who sets out to discover the truth about her father. The story takes place in the abandoned Samsara Hotel, located on the Moon.
The trailer reveals one of the game’s most disturbing sequences, where players encounter a terrifying experiment in which a human mind has been uploaded onto a server made up of live rats. Make sure to check out the video below. ONTOS is currently scheduled to launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and on PC via Steam.
