The elusive number 3

Valve seems to have something against the number 3.  Half Life 3, Team Fortress 3, and most importantly, Left 4 Dead 3 are all things that are either highly hushed, or just not exist despite…y’know, the obvious: that they should.   Add a 1 in front of it and it’s bad luck, but good things come in 3s, Valve!

I’m not shy about it – I love Left 4 Dead.  As I discussed in my article The Left 4 Dead Effect, I can’t get enough of it.  There’s something about it that grows on you – that stays with you…it’s infectious.  When people talk about Valve’s aversion to the number 3, they’re often waxing on about Half Life 3, but me?  I’m just jonesing for my next zombie apocalypse fix.

According to the website Techtoral, X360 Mag UK fired off a wishlist for what they’re looking for in the next Left 4 Dead despite limited indication that Valve has any plans for a third iteration of the zombie apocalypse shooter.  You can read that wishlist if you like here.

Like any fan, I’ve got my own wish for Left 4 Dead 3, aside from it actually existing sometime soon.

Don’t change a thing.

Perhaps it’s because the market is saturated with shooters, or maybe it’s just because I’m such a raging fangirl, but L4D has a pretty damned good set-up.  While I could get behind graphics updates and improvements to the Director, don’t fix what ain’t broken.

The great thing about Left 4 Dead is that it’s accessible.  In Left 4 Dead, you pick any character you want, pick up a weapon, point and click; then the magic happens.  You don’t have to worry about your team having a balance of classes or if your character is proficient with shotguns over machine guns or memorize a bunch of controls.

Valve put the idea of having fun at the forefront of Left 4 Dead.  Even the story is just barely there and to tell the truth it doesn’t even matter.  While I enjoyed learning about the characters’ backstories in canon comic series The Sacrifice, what I really enjoyed was that I wasn’t bogged down with story-scenes while trying to play the game with friends.

What do you think?  What do you want to see in the next Left 4 Dead?
