Don’t forget about Resident Evil

This year survival-horror fans are being treated to a healthy dose of titles. Dead Space 2 already has a month out in the market and it’s been received well, earning a perfect 10 from this editor. Silent Hill: Downpour is due out later this year and developer Vatra Games aims to make a game fans can approve of. We’re also getting Dead Island sometime later this year, a game that has re-surfaced from a lengthy hiatus to impress the hell out of everyone. So, what about Resident Evil?

This year we’re still potentially getting two games in the franchise. The one concrete release is Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D which is hitting the 3DS this summer. The other title is Resident Evil: Revelations. A game that, despite Capcom being quite secretive about it, has already sprouted hope in fans who yearn for the days of their favorite franchise actually being scary. But why does it seem like Revelations is being covered in the vast shadows that the other survival-horror titles have cast?

While we’ve already seen gameplay from this upcoming 3DS game, there’s no denying the fact that fans want to see more. We know we’ll be getting B.O.W.’s that channel that fear we felt all those years ago going up against zombies and Umbrella’s other creations. And we’re excited at the prospect of those dread-inducing enemies rearing their head once more. And quite frankly, this is what the franchise needs in order to reel back in all those fans who may have packed their bags and left upon completing Resident Evil 5’s main campaign.

Due to the nature and capabilities of the 3DS, Revelations will be utilizing the 3D effect to complement the survival-horror aspects already seen in the bare game, sans visual effects. This, of course, will only serve to heighten the impact of said horror-aspects. And we already know that one way it’s going to be used to freak out players is by allowing you to have a good look at what’s ahead of you, but with enemies being placed behind objects that are just waiting to pop out and strike you. This is the stuff we’ve been desiring in our Resident Evil games since the explosion of Raccoon city: actual fear.

The only thing left to do is for Capcom to make everyone more aware of this game coming out. Let’s just take a look at Dead Island, for example, a game that has been in hiatus for several years only to make one hell of  a return complemented by a very emotionally powerful cinematic trailer. Capcom could easily pull off something similar, in essence, for Revelations. It’s true the game may not see release this year, but even so it wouldn’t hurt for Capcom to start letting horror enthusiasts, and the uninitiated know about this game. Resident Evil has long been one of Capcom’s biggest franchises, and it is also the pioneer in mainstream survival-horror. Now it’s time to put the franchise back in the forefront and make it be as a hot a topic in survival-horror circles as Dead Island and other games have become.
