VRChat is an amusing game, but it can also be horrifying for a variety of reasons. The 3D social networking platform is host to rampant toxicity, though, that’s not entirely the developer’s fault and not a topic I intend to get into today. You’ll have to keep an eye on my Twitter for thoughts on that (and toxicity in gaming culture at large) for now. What I’d like to show off are just some examples of how players are embodying horror gaming characters within VRChat, thanks to its open and streamlined modding support.
Below are two videos taken some weekends ago of two players, one of whom roleplayed as Doki Doki Literature Club‘s Monika, the leader of the titular club, and the other Stubbs the zombie. The former does what one may expect the character to do (semi spoilers here) and the latter takes on an investigative and critical approach to one of the game’s more problematic memes: “Ugandan Knuckles”. I don’t know either of these players, but the interactions were interesting to watch. If I find more horror icons within VRChat, perhaps I’ll continue to post them here!
