DayZ Dev Blog Introduces Physics, Bows, and Pork Chops

Creative lead of DayZ, Dean Hall has released a video developer’s blog of some upcoming features set to come to the game in the future. For starters, lighting is being adjusted so flashlights and other light sources can be used during the day. Secondly, we’re given an extended look at a near-complete physics system; physics will eventually allow for players to throw items to friends or even hurt enemies. For the developers, the physics system will allow for better animations and ragdoll on player bodies.

Containers (such as refrigerators), makeshift bows, cooking, and hunting as also shown off. In the video, Dean kills a pig and picks up a variety of pork cuts. A new team has been brought onto DayZ‘s to work on the game’s hunting aspect.

Community questions regarding server optimization to reduce desync, and zombie respawning were addressed and Dean gives us an insight on the current status for both. Lastly, persistent objects such as backpacks, paper, and wood are in active testing.

Currently, Experimental Branch: 0.37.115791 is available on Steam and can be downloaded by going to the game’s Steam settings and enabling the Experimental Branch under Betas. The experimental patch includes the ability to capture rain in bottles, new two-handed melee animations (as seen in the devblog), and map updates. A new work in progress town has also been found!
