Whispers in The Dark Ep. 86: Perché Konami? Perché!?

On this reanimated episode of the Whispers in The Dark podcast, we relaunch the show in a topical format by taking a look at the cancellation of Silent Hills. New voices join myself, Kyle, and Whitney as we discuss the timeline of events leading up to the official confirmation that Silent Hills is no longer in production, our thoughts on P.T. as a piece of interactive content, and what we hope for from the series if it does continue.

We’ll be sticking to this format, so give us some suggestions for future episode topics in the comments below!

You can talk about TWIN PEAKS! Okay I’ll quit being a fanboy now XD looking forward to this one 😀

  • Andy

Alright it’s sad that Silent Hills has been canceled. But no one really knows what happened over at Konami. But I think people’s anger over this is getting a little ridiculous and over dramatic. Yeah it sucks for the fans and people that were looking forward to the real game but again you have no clue and you will never know what happened between Kojima and Konmai. They will never say to the public what actually happened.

    • Right, we don’t know if BunnyHops’ sources are correct at all. I wouldn’t take that as fact. Any criticism is directed at the events that were observed outright.

Nice to hear Vikki on this podcast, been enjoying her part on the DestrUKtoid podcast as well!

Silent Hill, Metal Gear, Castlevania… Why does a company like KONAMI own all my favourite video game franchises? ’tis a cruel fate…
Speaking of Castlevania – I’d love to hear you guys discuss the series in a future episode!

I also agree with Ahmad – if you’re not planning on just focusing on video games, it would be kind of neat to hear you talk about horror tv series (okay, Twin Peaks may not be horror, but it sure managed to freak me out when I first watched it). Have any of you watched Penny Dreadful yet?

Looking forward to the next episode, hope the wait won’t be as long as the last one! 🙂

    • I’ve been working through TP for the first time! We’ll debate on something like that.

I’ve also been watching Penny Dreadful, it’s neat. Wondering how this season will play out, though.

    • This made my day! Thanks for taking the time to say that. 🙂

The relationship between Macabre and Horror. (websters dic. says macabre “produces horror”) Talk about the rabbit hole, not whats inside the hole.
I wouldn’t mind a harry potter discussion. Not Harry, the characters and the story, maybe.. themes of harry potter or something. I find Hogwarts has alot of creepy shit going on within it’s walls when you stop to think about it. dementors, souls trapped in paintings..ect…

To be fair, this epsiode made feel a bit happy over the whole hoopla. Now what would be shocker is that this whole Kojima vs Konami war is actually a hoax! And both parties are secretly terrifying us to death which explains the “plural horror” thing XD Oooooor maybe not.

  • Misha Argall

I think an interesting topic would be the past, present & future of Frictional Games & their impact on indie horror.

  • Misha Argall

I think one thing this incident shows us is how opaque the decision making process is at major game publishers. We know very little, as Andy mentioned in his comment. Not sure if that’s due to Konami corporate culture, Japanese business practice in general, the language divide (are there Untranslated Japanese press articles that could make more sense out of this?), the personalities involved, or other factors. Will we ever get the real story?

  • Milan Mitic

One thing that might have come out good for Silent Hill series out of all this dawned on me while I was listening to the podcast and that is the fact that many tv series and video games have become qualitatively worse proportionally to their rise in popularity/sales. This, mind it, isn’t a rule, but is still more common than not. Some of the video game series going downhill with greater hype and broader audience are Resident Evil, Assassin’s Creed, C&C games and many others… Somehow immune to this are Rockstar and Blizzard companies. It could be a good podcast theme – something like ‘Resident Evil transformation through time’ or even something like ‘The evolution of horror in games and the audience seeking it’ or something down the lines.

    • Misha Argall

I think another cause of this might be the idea that as a series continues, it becomes more formulaic or otherwise loses what was special in the original entry and its immediate successors. Series that go beyond two films for example: Rocky/Rambo, Star Trek, the Star Wars prequels, Terminator. “Sequelitis” article on TV Tropes website goes into this in great detail.

    Whispers are dead?

  • MrRabbit

what if the whole thing between konami and kojima and its cancellation is just a ruse, a distraction to keep people from checking on silent hills progress or seeking out leaked information until they surprise us with a release of silent hills. not that i still believe the game is coming but the entire situation is kind of fishy at best .

    • Wojciech Olczyk

yeah…. it could be Kojima stunt….. but now is less likely…
