Possible candidates for the “unruly evil” in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow ‘Reverie’

There’s been many back and forth debates in regards to who the big baddie will be in the upcoming ‘Reverie’ DLC for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. While you may not find anything entirely new in the list below, we just found it convenient to compile all the different candidates for such a role in this manner. So, who exactly may be visiting the castle to trouble Gabriel and Laura? (Let us know if we missed any in the comments below!)

The Creature

While he isn’t exactly a demon, which is what Laura described the threat as in the trailer, Frankenstein’s classic monster could in fact prove to be a reasonable threat for Gabriel and Laura. I had speculated that this would be the case pretty early on, but after the revelation that the threat would be a “demon” I’m not entirely sure if we’ll be facing The Creature. It would certainly fit with the whole castle motif since the Vampire’s Castle used to in fact be under the reign of Dr. Frankenstein and the Bernhard family, in which said doctor held his cruel experiments. We may face his most famous experiment in ‘Reverie’.

Galamoth

We all love this big electrifying guy. He was quite a pain to defeat in the PS1 classic Symphony of the Night if you decided you wanted to actually beat him. Galamoth’s sole purpose is to rule the Netherworld, in the previous Castlevania timeline at least, that mission may be a bit more contained in Lords of Shadow, though. First, rule the castle and then go from there to take over other realms if he so wishes. But just imagine how he would be translated into Lords of Shadow’s universe. Galamoth would definitely be a huge threat and it’ll kind of tie in with Laura’s apparent electrical prowess.

Menace

Featured in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for the Nintendo DS and most recently in Harmony of Despair for the XBLA, Menace was created by Celia Fortner and Dmitrii Blinov. You fight this abomination, as Soma Cruz, when you head into the Abyss after going through the main castle in the DS title. Menace is, obviously, a huge threat just in his physical appearance alone. He could be held within the confines of the Vampire’s Castle in Lords of Shadow just waiting for the right moment to strike. But, Laura states that whoever it is isn’t actually there yet so contradictions arise. Regardless, we’ve already had huge titan battles in the main game so one can’t help but be excited at the prospect of a boss battle against Menace.

Chaos

Though not exactly capable of being referred to as a single being, Chaos is more of an essence. The essence of pure chaos to be exact. Chaos is what drives Dracula and serves as his source of power. He was featured prominently in the GBA title Aria of Sorrow and it actually handpicked Soma to be the next prince of darkness. Chaos represents an interesting possibility due to it’s overall nature as the source behind the Dark Lord. This probably was the case when Carmilla was the ruler of the castle until she was slayed by Gabriel leaving Chaos to fend without a physical body to grant powers to. Chaos may have actually been sort of feeding her with dark powers in order to have her keep the title of  the Dark Lord. And now, in Reverie, after Gabriel and Laura defeat Chaos all of that power may go into Gabriel himself thus leading to his eventual path to becoming Dracula.

Zobek/ Death

This is would be quite a battle. Last time we saw Zobek he was busy being burned by Satan. Now, obviously, he’s pretty pissed. Having Zobek serve as this DLC’s villain could explain why  necromancers are lurking in the castle. Because as we know, the necros  only follow the presence of their Lord. The common belief is that Zobek will be saved for the next DLC, Resurrection, but after seeing the aforementioned necromancers as well as concept art for the clock tower we may end up fighting Death himself once ‘Reverie’ hits. Imagine a battle with Zobek/Death above the castle’s clock tower, now that’ll be quite a scene.

The third vampire brother

In the main game Gabriel faces both Brauner and Olrox, the two vampire generals serving Carmilla. They’re both also named after already established Castlevania foes. It may be a possibility that there’s a third brother. This third vampire may have been kept away from the castle and thus his other brothers by Carmilla who may have deemed him too dangerous to be there for whatever reason (possibly due to him being a rebel). Now, Carmilla is long gone so that unknown vampire general could be making his way back to the castle to avenge not only the death of his former queen, but the death of his brothers as well. It’s also interesting to note how Brauner and Olrox were initially demons from the depths of hell before turning into vampires and serving Carmilla. This would make a potential third brother already fit the bill for the “demon” Laura refers to in the trailer. We’ll have to wait and see.

The Hellspawn

If you read the Brotherhood scrolls and listened to Zobek’s narratives during the main game then you’re aware of the demonic essence of the Vampire’s Castle. As aforementioned, the castle used to belong to the Bernhard family before Carmilla overthrew them taking control of the castle herself. And possibly also keeping one of the Bernhards for herself (Laura). The castle’s backstory given in the game detailed its demonic essence coming from a pact the Bernhard family made with a hellspawn. It seems that the castle was already cursed even before Carmilla and her vampires started to dwell within its confines. We may face some sort of embodiment of this hellspawn in ‘Reverie’, especially due to the old Bernhard castle being shown when Laura states that a demon is coming. This is also leads to the final candidate…

Doppelganger

Such an enemy wouldn’t be completely out of the realm of possibility and we may face a demon who decides to take the form of Gabriel himself. Throughout the franchise we’ve had multiple fights against these doppelgangers and a return of said enemy would be quite nice in ‘Reverie’. Of course this would prove to be a very hard battle to overcome so the only way to do so may involve Gabriel turning into a vampire, which has been alluded to already. The Hellspawn mentioned previously may take the form of Gabriel when it reveals itself to both him and Laura. This may not happen, but it wouldn’t be unexpected if it did.

What do you guys think? Do you guys agree/disagree with any of the candidates mentioned? Keep in mind that this was pretty much a compilation of what fans have been speculating. But did we miss any classic foes you would want to see? Make sure to sound off in the comments below or email me personally  at jbocanegra@relyonhorror.com.
