Just last month, The Scourge (Tai Ương) was released on Steam by Rare Reversee, a small indie team based in Vietnam. It became a huge hit, amassing more than 60,000 downloads and maintaining a 94% positive rating on the platform.
The Scourge is a first-person psychological horror game set in a 1990s Saigon apartment block and offers a psychological and atmospheric experience. In the game, players play as Nhật Huy, a young man who gets trapped in a disturbing lucid dream-like nightmare inside a cursed apartment.
Following the successful launch of Rare Reversee’s debut title, Variety reports that the game is set to receive a film adaptation. It’s written by Tran Khanh Hoang and directed by Doan Si Nguyen. While the movie’s release date hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s been suggested for a 2027 release.
Skyline Media, a Vietnam-based sales agent, is currently working to introduce the project to international buyers at the Cannes Film Market. Charlie Nguyen (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny) & Jimmy Pham Nghiem of Chanh Phuong Films are producing.
Speaking about The Scourge, Skyline Media CEO Hang Trinh stated:
As the first Vietnamese feature film inspired by an original local game IP, The Scourge is a major step forward not only for Vietnamese cinematic storytelling but for the country’s broader content ecosystem.
Not much has been revealed about The Scourge film adaptation yet, but be sure to follow us to stay updated on the latest updates.
