The New Resident Evil Film Will Be "Fresh, Edgy, and Weird"

Zach Cregger, the screenwriter and director of the upcoming Resident Evil film, has shared more details about the new movie based on Capcom’s survival horror franchise.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Zach Cregger confirmed that the story will be original and not based on any of the video games. He described it as “weird,” “fresh,” and “edgy,” very different from previous film adaptations.

“That’s an original screenplay, by the way,” Cregger said. “It’s a weird story. I wrote it and I love the story. It has nothing to do with any of the other Resident Evil movies. If I do my job, it will feel fresh and edgy and weird.”

While this description might worry some Resident Evil fans, Cregger previously reassured them in April that the film will be built in the spirit of the series and will capture the tension and sense of danger found in the games.

At the moment, there are not many other details about the film. Last month, Daniel RPK shared a possible plot synopsis:

Bryan, “a laid-back organ courier”, will reportedly be portrayed by The Walking Dead’s Austin Abrams. Bryan has to go on a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital, and that’s where the strangeness starts to unfold.

During the delivery, Bryan has to pass a snowy mountain road, where he accidentally hits a strange woman with his car. The woman survives somehow, but something seems “very wrong”. Bryan tries to help the lady and ends up stumbling “into a full-blown outbreak involving horrifying tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities”.

In other news, Resident Evil Requiem was initially an online game, but Capcom realized it’s not what fans want, switching to a traditional gameplay formula.
