Resident Evil-Style Indie Horror ‘Ground Zero’ Shows Off PS1-Inspired Terror in New Trailer

Ground ZeroGround Zero is an upcoming retro survival horror set in a post-apocalyptic South Korea. UK-based games publisher Kwalee, and independent developer Malformation Games have just released an intense new gameplay trailer showing off what players can expect from the game’s story and setting.

The trailer shows an elite agent named Seo-Yeon, along with her Canadian partner, who are sent to investigate the aftermath of the destruction of Busan, South Korea, caused by an unexplained meteor strike. The city devolves into chaos as monstrous creatures begin to appear.

Ground Zero Soon after, they uncover a larger plot involving unethical research and the hidden roots of the outbreak. As a result, their objective quickly shifts from investigation to a struggle for survival. To escape, Seo-Yeon must face danger, solve puzzles, and fight against monstrous creatures.

While the game appears to be a modern take on a PS1-era style, it looks very much inspired by the Resident Evil franchise for obvious reasons—such as offering numerous unlockables and extra content.

It also features fixed camera angles, evoking a familiar feel reminiscent of Resident Evil, as well as difficulty options, secret endings, and more. Since this is the first title from the developers, it is possible that they took inspiration from the Resident Evil franchise.

Ground ZeroKey Features:

• Fight terrifying monsters that lurk in the dark corners of Busan, mutated by the fallout of the impact.

• Uncover the truth of what really hit Busan that day. What are these strange growths unravelling from the meteor impact, and why has it corrupted what little life remains in the aftermath?

• Explore a beautiful city in ruins, from shoreline towns and temples to the urban center.

• Defend yourself with an array of abilities; shoot, stab, kick and counter as an expert soldier trained in firearm and martial combat.

• Perfect your fighting skills and get rewarded. Cleaner kills means more Genome Points, which can be traded for powerful gear upgrades.

• Take on huge, terrifying bosses. Seo-Yeon has no idea just how bad the mutations can get in the heart of the city. Be prepared for anything.

• Relive the spirit of classic Survival Horror. Ground Zero captures the nostalgia of retro horror titles with fixed cameras and pre-rendered backgrounds, puzzles, custom difficulty and optional tank controls.

• Have fun with unlockables and extra content: alternate outfits, additional game modes and hidden endings await players curious enough to find them.

Ground Zero Regardless, the title looks interesting, and I’m going to play it. Although it has been confirmed that the game will be released on PC through Steam, the developers have yet to confirm the release date.
