More than 12 years after being cancelled, P.T. refuses to disappear. The long-lost Silent Hills demo still scare players to this day, and now someone is (unofficially) bringing Kojima/del Toro’s original PS4 game to PC.
A developer and modder known as Lorean The Gamer is reverse-engineering P.T. to build a native Windows PC port. Instead of recreating it from scratch, this version is being built from the original files, so doesn’t need a PlayStation 4 emulator to run.
Lorean is recreating the game’s logic and graphics system using C++ and Vulkan. However, players will need to provide the game data from their own copy of the PS4 release in order to play it. The project is reportedly 97% complete and can be played from beginning to end. It covers everything from the options screen to the end sequence.
The original Lua scripts are working, along with the game’s traps, cutscenes, and Lisa’s full animation setup. A lot of work has also gone into bringing the original Fox Engine visuals to PC. The PS4 shaders are being translated so lighting, shadows, local reflections, motion blur, bloom, and fog can be shown properly.
P.T. lives on
The port also supports the original Wwise audio, including radio broadcasts and offline speech recognition for the parts that use the player’s voice. Controller vibration is also supported.
The modder has added several improvements, as well. While the PS4 version was locked to 30 FPS, Lorean’s PC port can target 60 FPS or higher. It supports unrestricted resolutions, native mouse and keyboard controls, and optional AMD FSR and DLSS upscaling. Modern controllers are also supported, including the PS5 DualSense and Xbox Series X|S controller.
The developer is paying close attention to how closely the PC version matches the original. Footage from the port is being compared frame by frame to the PS4 release. It seems the aim is to get as close to a 1:1 recreation as possible.
At the time of writing, there’s no confirmed release date. However, Lorean has shared a full gameplay video, showing around 30 minutes of the project. We’ll bring you word when we learn of a potential launch date. In the meantime, follow us on Facebook for more horror gaming news.
