Oh wow, this is actually a dream coming true in the making.
For years, I’ve fantasied about an all-horror based fighting game- Marvel vs Capcom but staring killers and monsters from famous Hollywood franchises and games, and it looks like it very well might be in the cards for Netherrealm, the studio behind the Mortal Kombat franchise. The last two entries, Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat X, added in a plethora of classic horror movie monsters, starting with Freddy Kruger (A Nightmare on Elm Street) as a guest character, and moving on to include Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), the Xenomorph (Alien), the Predator, and Jason (Friday the 13th). During an interview with Game Informer during the Mortal Kombat X Pro League Finals in Los Angeles, Ed Boon (Mortal Kombat co-creator and creative director of MK9 and MKX) shed some light on the possibility of just making an Injustice style title- but with the killers as the stars.
“Yes, yes! You know, as we’ve been accumulating them, that idea has been coming up more and more frequently, You brought it up and a few other people have brought it up like ‘why don’t you do a horror movie fighting game?’ Maybe one day we’ll do it.”
Yeah, that sounds more like a “we’re working on it but can’t say anything yet, go pre-order Injustice 2 for now” than just a casual comment- but I have been known to be crazy. Here’s hoping this is actually something that could be happening. There’s so much to draw from when it comes to building a horror themed fighting roster; from Hannibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs), The THING, and Jigsaw (Saw) to maybe even licensing some horror game properties (?) like possibly the T-001 Tyrant (Resident Evil), Pyramid Head (Silent Hill), and the Walrider (Outlast)- the list is potentially endless. Even on top of that, think of the stages that could be used as well! The house from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the RPD Station from Resident Evil, so many choices! I’m super stoked for any chance of this happening, so come on, Netherrealm! Make this man-child’s dream of having a Necromorph (Dead Space) get it’s ass kicked by the Mother (PSYCHO) become a reality!
