Netflix has confirmed the closure of two more studios, one of which is Night School Studio, the American developer behind Oxenfree and, more recently, the interactive horror game Unhinged.
Unhinged was released at the end of June and was received fairly well. The game focuses on Ava, who’s trapped in her apartment during a hurricane. Player take control by using a smartphone, rather than the traditional methods of gaming.
Night School Studio was acquired by Netflix in 2021, with the title being backed by David Fincher and Zach Cregger. The reasons for the closure remain unknown, as Netflix has yet to give an official statement.
According to Variety (via Game File), a Netflix spokesperson expressed gratitude to both Night School and Moonlot (which has also closed down) for their work and wished them the best. The spokesperson stated:
We are incredibly grateful to the talented colleagues we’re saying goodbye to today. We thank them for all their contributions to Netflix, and wish them the best.
Netflix, which expanded into gaming in 2021, has been laying off employees and closing down multiple studios in recent years. Outfits like Boss Fight, Team Blue, and more have all been shuttered by the streaming platform. Variety further reports that Netflix now wants to centre its video game business around cloud gaming and kids’ titles, adding that the company is “making organizational changes to the business.”
