Hideo Kojima Claims OD Features a Gameplay System No One Has Seen Before

OD

OD was announced back in 2023 during The Game Awards, but almost three years after the official announcement, we still don’t have much actual information about the game.

Hideo Kojima discusses the game once in a while, and the last time he did, he said he’s unsure whether it would work and that it is likely to be hit-or-miss.

Although this year has been great for horror gaming fans, with many exciting shows and announcements, Kojima remained quiet about OD’s development. Recently, during Xbox’s 25th anniversary, Kojima spoke with EW and teased a special gameplay system he has been working on for OD.

While he said he can’t reveal much because it would get him in trouble, Kojima briefly explained:

I wanted to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached. It’s a single-player game, and I wanted to make it as scary as possible. But for those that might stop playing when it gets too scary, I have thought of a system that will allow them to keep going. I can’t say much more, because it’ll give too much of a hint on the system, and I could get in trouble for saying too much!

Further discussing the game system, Kojima said he wanted to do something new, something that has never been done before, and that he has been working on it by himself. He stated:

I had this OD concept since I was working on DS1 [Death Stranding], and I was working on it just by myself. I can’t reveal much detail, but it’s something that no one has ever seen before. A new game system.

OD New Tease

Kojima pitched the idea to many publishers, but none understood the concept and called him crazy until Phil Spencer believed in it.

We still don’t have much to go on for OD, but we were also given a new look at the game. It seems Kojima is finally shifting his focus toward OD’s development, and we can expect to hear more about the title in the near future.
