Koei Tecmo has just announced their next step in bringing back the classic horror franchise that’s been in a state of revival since 2021, with the revealing of a new Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remake in the works, updating the 2003 classic with stunning modern visuals and updated controls on modern platforms.
This comes after the recent remasters of Fatal Frame 4 and Fatal Frame 5, and seems to be aiming to bring Fatal Frame II more up to date with those more recent games in the series, which is a trip I’m all in for.
The new visuals are a treat to behold, as the new trailer and screenshots have shown, and the game is set to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC in early 2026. We’re wondering how hard this release might butt up against the release of Resident Evil: Requiem, but I’d guess they’ll spread it out just a little bit.
This is interesting since it joins a short list of games that have been remade or reimagined more than once in this genre, including the original Castlevania and MediEvil, since Fatal Frame II also got a remake on the Nintendo Wii in 2012, using the Fatal Frame IV engine. Seeing it updated again really cements Koei Tecmo’s faith in this game as one of their most popular and successful games in the series and signals their dedication to keeping the series’ importance alive. We tend to agree, as we’ve covered the series and its history several times before, including in two of our Generations of Horror series, and glad to see its legacy is still going over twenty years later.
There’s also an official website for the game where you can see and read more about it, but’s great to see them devoting to keeping Fatal Frame around, and we can’t wait to check it out in just a few months.
Be sure to check out the announcement trailer below, and stay tuned for a full review when the game launches early next year.
