DailyVania (9/28/10): What happened to IGA’s Symphony of the Night sequel?

It was at TGS 08’ where Konami showed off a trailer for a new Castlevania title, which seemed to star Alucard. The title has since, slipped under the radar. With Lords of Shadow taking the spotlight completely, leaving one to wonder, what happened to this game? Will it ever see the light of day? Let us speculate.

As aforementioned, this title which seemed to be a sequel to the much praised Symphony of the Night, was shown in video format at TGS 08. You can see that video below:

This teaser indicates that the project was at a very primal stage, possibly scrapped by now. But it sure showed some promise. Alucard taking the starring role in what seemed to be a sequel to one of the greatest games of all time. What’s not to love about that? It seems that Konami decided it to be a smart move to ignore this project for the time being and instead shift gears, fully, towards Mercury Steam’s Lords of Shadow. One other thing comes to mind when constructing such a sentence.

It was mentioned, on multiple occasions, how Dave Cox and his team were among other developers, each pitching a brand new title in the Castlevania franchise. As we now know, Cox pitched a full-on remake of the 8-bit original. IGA’s team , on the other hand, most likely pitched what we saw at TGS 08’. Obviously, we know which project won, but does that mean we’ll never see this Alucard-lead title?

Not exactly. Lords of Shadow is performing admirably, on a critical level, thus far. This will most definitely raise Konami’s hopes in terms of developing 3D titles in the franchise. Perhaps, as I wrote about in a previous article, Mercury Steam will handle this rebooted take on the franchise and continue with their gameplay mechanics that resemble the original titles. All this, while IGA and his team continue forth with the style of Castlevania he made popular with the release of Symphony of the Night. I think it’s time for Konami to stop limiting their amount of funding towards IGA’s projects. This was evident in Castlevania Harmony of Despair. While the game was great in it’s own regards, it was made up of already used assets from the DS and GBA titles. IGA can do more than that. Let him pick up from where he left off with this seemingly Symphony of the Night sequel.

Fans have been clamoring for a solid 3D effort in the Castlevania series for a while, and now finally, Lords of Shadow seems to fulfill that desire. Now it’s time to answer to those fans that have been dying to play a new Castlevania title, in the mold of Symphony of the Night, on a home console. I’m pretty sure we’ll get to see that day,

Have a good night! Keep an eye out for Nintendo 3DS  news throughout the late hours!
