Rare Reversee, a small indie team based in Vietnam recently launched their debut PC game, The Scourge (Tai Uơng). To their surprise and delight, the game has received an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, with 93% positive reviews from over 870 players. So far, the game has sold over 37,000 units.
The Scourge is a first-person psychological horror game set in a 1990s Saigon apartment block. Instead of relying on jump scares, the developers leaned heavily into building an oppressive atmosphere and exploring a deep narrative about generational trauma and Vietnamese urban legends. If you appreciate the atmospheric dread of Silent Hill 2 or Devotion, The Scourge is a love letter to that specific kind of horror.
Because the core development team comes from a high-end CGI background (creating commercials for brands like Samsung and Unilever), they were able to push the visual fidelity and environmental storytelling far beyond what you might expect from a debut indie studio in Southeast Asia.
Story:
The protagonist carries a dark fate — their bloodline cursed by a malevolent supernatural force as consequence for sins committed by their ancestors. Disillusioned with life and drowning in hallucinations to escape the pain, they are plagued by nightmares so vivid that the line between reality and delusion has all but dissolved.
The story begins in a crumbling Saigon apartment, where strange supernatural occurrences begin to bleed into daily life. To break the curse and reclaim their mind, the protagonist must confront their own wounds, their family’s buried transgressions, and ultimately face the most terrifying enemy of all — the one lurking inside their own consciousness.
Core Gameplay:
The Scourge blends four interwoven gameplay pillars to create an immersive and psychologically unsettling experience, including:
• Exploration — Navigate a hauntingly reconstructed 1990s Saigon, piecing together the narrative through environmental storytelling and collectible clues.
• Puzzles — Solve intricate, context-driven puzzles embedded into the environment, requiring critical thinking to progress.
• Narrative — Player choices shape the unfolding story, unlocking new areas and revealing the dark lore, layer by layer.
• Combat & Stealth — Strategically navigate and overcome supernatural threats through a mix of stealth and confrontation mechanics.
Key Features:
• Photorealistic 3D environments meticulously recreated to reflect the aesthetic of 1990s Saigon: cramped alleyways, ancestral altars, traditional interiors, and haunted corridors.
• Deep Vietnamese cultural authenticity — folklore, traditional attire, period-accurate architecture, and spiritual rituals woven throughout the game world.
• Branching narrative shaped by player choices, with multiple layers of lore and secrets to uncover.
• Captivating character models with lifelike facial expressions, authentic period costumes, and nuanced animations
Currently, Western players only make up a small fraction of the game’s audience, but the developers believe that fans of narrative horror will genuinely love discovering this world.
The Scourge is currently available for PC via Steam. The game is verified as Steam Deck compatible, and there’s even a demo for you to try out.
