Total Chaos, Psychological Horror featuring Akira Yamaoka, Surprise Launches Today

Total Chaos

In a major surprise announcement during today’s Xbox Partner Preview, Apogee Entertainment and Atari’s Infogrames label officially launched Total Chaos, the psychological survival horror title from developer Sam Prebble. The game is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC, marking the culmination of nearly two decades of evolution from award-winning DOOM II mod to full-fledged nightmare.

Set on the desolate island of Fort Oasis, Total Chaos blends classic survival horror traditions with modern design sensibilities. Players can expect tight resource management, brutal melee and ranged combat, and a relentless atmosphere built on tension, dread, and oppressive environmental storytelling.

The environments showcase Prebble’s extensive experience in both game development (Turbo Overkill) and Hollywood VFX (Avatar, The Hobbit, Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Prebble stated about the game:

Returning to Fort Oasis and rebuilding it as a standalone release is something I never imagined. See you on the island. Listen carefully to the voice you follow.

Apogee Executive Producer Jeron Moore emphasized the project’s roots and expansion as well, stating, “What began as a total conversion mod has grown into a faithful and expanded remake… a truly landmark horror experience.” Atari CEO Wade Rosen echoed this enthusiasm, calling Total Chaos “the scariest game Atari has ever been associated with.”

The game also features new music by legendary Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka, who describes the soundscape as “a journey where unseen landscapes are felt through the ears rather than seen by the eyes.”

Players will explore nine chapters of Fort Oasis’ ruined landscape, craft and upgrade weapons, survive encounters with twisted monstrosities, and unravel the island’s long-buried secrets before their sanity slips away.

Total Chaos is available now for $24.99 on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with Game Pass support and SteamVR arriving in 2026. You can watch the launch trailer below:
