Return to Silent Hill was released in theatres just last week and has faced massive criticism from fans for messing with the lore. The movie currently has a score of just 19% with over 50 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite the poor reception, the director of the movie, Christophe Gans, says he was told to keep the length under 2 hours, and that a longer version exists, which he hopes fans can see.
A fan who attended the premiere and the Q&A with the filmmaker last week shared some highlights from the event on Reddit. The director states that the alternate version gave the story more room to breathe.
A Director’s Cut exists, but Gans does not know if it will ever be released. He described it as longer and allowing more room to breathe.
He also said he filmed a death scene for one of the most prominent characters, which briefly appeared in Return to Silent Hill, but because the studio required the movie to stay under 2 hours, he couldn’t find the right place for it in the final edit.
Eddie’s death scene was filmed but ultimately removed from the final cut. It is unclear whether it would appear in the Director’s Cut, though he expressed a desire for audiences to see it someday.
It’s unknown whether the director’s cut will ever see the light of day, following the movie’s poor reception. In other news, the director isn’t done with the franchise, as he hopes to work on another film.
