Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake Launches With a New Trailer

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo have released the launch trailer for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, and it is just as frightening as fans would expect. The trailer presents a tense montage that introduces the unsettling atmosphere of this remake in about a minute and a half.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake tells the story of Mio and Mayu, twin sisters who become lost in a forest and end up in the mysterious village of Minakami.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson ButterflyThe night feels endless, and the village looks abandoned, with only ghosts and signs of past tragedies left behind. The twins start exploring the empty streets, trying to understand how they ended up there and why Mayu is having strange visions that show parts of the village’s past.

The remake has received generally positive reactions from critics, though the scores are not outstanding. It is currently holding a score of 74 out of 100 on Metacritic. Critics consider it a faithful and respectful remake of the original game, despite some noticeable technical limitations.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake Gets Release Date and New TrailerFrom a gameplay perspective, the stiff controls are partly intentional. They are meant to reflect the awkward movements of a frightened protagonist. Mio can defend herself against spirits using the Camera Obscura, a special camera that allows players to exorcise ghosts by photographing them.

In Rely on Horror’s review, we gave the game a score of 7.5 out of 10, stating:

This remake aims pretty high at trying to update a survival horror classic to the modern era, and succeeds with flying colors on many of its updates, but also fumbles a few of them, which need some more work.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is available now on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
