The dead are on the move again! Following the success of Dead Island 2, the 2023 sequel to the infamous 2011 chop-’em-up open world zombie game, developer Dambuster Studios have began teasing something new for the franchise.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the devs celebrated DI2 hitting the 20 million player – or ‘slayer’, as the team playfully puts it – milestone.
After commemorating the history of the series and celebrating the feat, Dambuster go on to hint at the future.
They write:
The next outbreak? Dambuster is already drenched in the work. The journey is far from over…
The accompanying teaser image (shown above) shows what appears to be Dead Island 2’s Jacob, suitcase in hand, hitchhiking his way to new pastures. This seems to indicate a change of scenery for the next entry. That wouldn’t be surprising, as part two moved the setting away from the fictional island of Banoi to very-real Los Angeles. In that sense, changing locations once again only seems fitting
However, where exactly Jacob is heading – and if the project to come is even ‘Dead Island 3‘ – remains to be seen. It could be a direct, un-numbered sequel (a la Dead Island: Riptide). It could be a spin-off, or additional DLC to compliment the already-existing expansions. Or it could be Dead Island 3 proper, presumably another unrelated entry with a new cast of characters. Dambuster seems to be playing coy, but all will be revealed in good time.
