Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City seeing digital only release for PC in North America

It appears as if Capcom is seeking to bank a good profit on sales of the PC version of Operation Raccoon City in North America.  The publisher has announced that North America will see a digital only release of Operation Raccoon City.

When asked on the Capcom forums about the worrisome lack of PC options available at retail outlets despite a PC version being announced, Capcom’s Corporate Officer/Senior VP Christian Svensson stated the following:

There’s a PC version coming.  For North America though, like all recent Capcom PC titles, it will be digital release only.  So you’re not going to see listings at traditional retailers for it.  North American retailers have not been supportive of packaged goods and the digital sales on PC for us have long since been the lion’s-share of sales anyway.

Europe I believe will have packaged goods though.

While it’s not an official announcement, this news pretty much seals the deal for any cool collectibles or goodies bundled with a special collector’s edition.  We can’t exactly say that we’re all that thrilled about digital-only distribution, seeing as how many games have a launch-day delay…

So while our console cousins are enjoying some ORC at midnight on launch day, we have to wait until the game unlocks for play, usually a few hours or so in.  No word additionally on which content providers will have the game for sale, or whether it will be a GFWL title or strictly a Steam affair.

What do you think?  Do you like digital distribution, or do you like seeing the game on your shelf, proudly displaying it in your vast collection?
